This herb's active compounds help support a healthy stress response, anxiety relief, mood enhancement and improved sleep patterns.
STUDY 1 - Anxiety & Sleep:
One study of people with mild-to-moderate anxiety disorders and sleep disturbances, showed 85% of subjects that supplemented with lemon balm extract achieved full remission for insomnia and 70% of the subjects had complete relief of anxiety symptoms.13
STUDY 2 - Anxiety & Sleep:
Lemon balm is an herb in the mint family that enhances GABA neurotransmitter activity in the brain, but by a different mechanism than benzodiazepines and other sleeping pills.
The compounds in lemon balm, including rosmarinic acid, have been found to inhibit the enzyme that normally degrades GABA.14 This keeps GABA levels higher, to support a sleep-promoting and anxiety-reducing effect.
STUDY 3 - Depression, Anxiety & Stress:
Another study of lemon balm evaluated patients with heart disease who had trouble sleeping, along with high levels of depression, anxiety, and stress.15 These subjects were randomized to receive either a lemon balm supplement or a placebo for eight weeks.
The patients taking lemon balm had significantly reduced scores for depression, anxiety, and stress. They also took less time to fall asleep and had an increase in total sleep duration.
5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is an amino acid precursor of serotonin with potential antidepressant, anti-anxiety, sleep, and weight management (appetite suppression) benefits.
STUDY 1 - Depression:
The antidepressant effects of 5-HTP have been comparable to those of some conventional antidepressants.16 In a clinical trial involving 52 healthy male subjects, 5-HTP enhanced serotonin levels by 35%.17
STUDY 2 - Panic Attacks and Anxiety:
People who suffered from chronic panic attacks, due to lower availability of serotonin in the brain, found significant relief after taking 200 mg of 5-HTP.18 (the exact dose found in ProVanax)
When 5-HTP was combined with GABA, promoted a sense of "deep relaxation and decreased anxiety" in 67% of users.18 (which is the combination found in ProVanax)
STUDY 3 - Weight Loss:
Another side-benefit of using 5-HTP is a reduction in cravings and appetite, which can lead to weight loss. This is because carbohydrates increase serotonin. By supplementing with 5-HTP, this can be reversed.
In clinical trials, 5-HTP supplementation in women resulted in a decreased food intake and caused weight loss 15
St. John's Wort is a medicinal herb that has been used for centuries to treat depression. Its use for mild to moderate depression has been supported by clinical studies in recent years.
STUDY 1 - Germany & Anti-Depressant:
In Germany, 40+ million people take 5-HTP (hypericum) for depression. A meta-analysis and review of 23 randomized clinical trials involving 1757 people with mild or moderately severe depressive disorders showed that St. John's Wort was 2.7 times superior to a placebo in relieving depressive symptoms and was as effective as standard antidepressant drugs.
Side effects occurred in 7.8% of patients on St. John's Wort, compared with 62.8% of those taking standard antidepressant drugs. The conclusion of the researchers was that St. John's Wort is more effective than a placebo for treatment of mild to moderately severe depressive disorders (Linde et al. 1996).
STUDY 2 - Works Better & Less Side-Effects:
Most of the studies have examined the benefits of St. John's Wort in people with mild to moderate depression. However, Vorbach et al. (1997) compared 600 mg three times a day, a dosage double the usual prescribed dosage, with 50 mg three times a day of imipramine in patients with severe depression.
St. John's Wort proved to be equivalent in efficacy, but with far fewer adverse effects (25.6%, compared to 81.4% for imipramine) (Vorbach et al. 1997).
STUDY 3 - Better & Safer Than Prozac:
One criticism of the St. John's Wort research was that, although the herb had compared favorably to drugs such as imipramine, amitriptyline, and maprotiline, it had yet to be compared to the more commonly prescribed selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Prozac. Three studies in patients with mild to moderate depression have changed that.
In the first study, Harrer et al. (1999) found that St. John's Wort extract to be as effective in elderly German patients as Prozac.
In the second study by Schrader (2000), a rather low daily dose of St. John's Wort (500 mg a day) was equivalent to 20 mg a day of fluoxetine (Prozac). Significantly, more of the 240 volunteers responded to St. John's Wort than Prozac (60% versus 40%) and the herb produced significantly fewer side effects (8% of St. John's Wort patients versus 23% of Prozac patients).
In a 2000 study, the same low dose (500 mg a day) proved as effective as 75 mg twice a day of imipramine, but with far fewer side effects (Woelk 2000).
STUDY 4 - As Beneficial As Zoloft:
A third study by Brenner et al. (2000) judged St. John's Wort extract (600 mg for 1week, then 900 mg for 6 weeks) as beneficial as sertraline (Zoloft, 50 mg for 1 week, then 75 mg for 6 weeks).
STUDY 5 - Menopause, PMS & S.A.D.:
Health practitioners have also found St. John's Wort helpful in treating low mood associated with menopause, premenstrual syndrome, and seasonal affective disorder (S.A.D.) Grube et al. (1999) gave menopausal women 300 mg three times daily of St. John's Wort for 12 weeks.
Surprisingly, both the psychological and physical symptoms of menopause improved substantially. So did sexual well-being. Kasper (1997) found that St. John's Wort decreased the low mood associated with seasonal affective disorder on par with results the same researcher had found earlier for fluoxetine (Prozac).
Passion Flower, which found n ProVanax... is used a lower dose, but a much higher quality extract in which you will receive all of the "anti-anxiety" benefits, but WITHOUT the sedation!
Passion flower has a tranquilizing effect, including mild sedative and anti-anxiety effects. In studies conducted since the 1930's, its mode of action has been found to be different than that of most sedative drugs (sleeping pills), thus making it a non-addictive herb to promote relaxation.
The sedative effect of Passion flower has made it popular for treating a variety of ailments, including nervousness and insomnia.
Research had indicated that passion flower has a complex activity on the central nervous system (CNS), which is responsible for its overall tranquilizing effects.
But for sleeping purposes, a much higher dosage is required.
Valerian is a perennial plant native to North America and Europe. The root is the portion of the plant used for medicinal effects. Historically, valerian's primary use was as a sedative for the relief of insomnia, anxiety, mental stress and conditions associated with pain (both physical & emotional pain). Several recent clinical studies have substantiated this historical use.
STUDY 1 - Anxiety:
Valerian is known as ‘nature’s Valium’ because it has a similar effect on reducing anxiety as the benzodiazepines like Valium and Xanax. These bind to GABA receptors in the brain (amygdala).21,22
In a study of 2,462 adults with major depressive disorder and anxiety found that Valerian taken in combination with St John’s Wort (both found in ProVanax) for 6 weeks reduced the symptoms of anxiety and depression by 66%.23
STUDY 2 - Stress Management:
Valerian may also reduce physical reactions during stressful situations. It slows heart rate and reduced blood pressure in response to stress.24
Another human study of healthy volunteers found that the combination of lemon balm and Valerian (both found in ProVanax) improved both "stress" & "anxiety" scores in only 4 days!.25
Inositol is an unofficial member of the B vitamin group that functions as a primary component of cell membranes. Although inositol has not been shown to be essential in the human diet, supplementation has shown to exert some very beneficial effects in cases of depression, panic attacks and even diabetes.
Inositol is required for the proper action of several brain neurotransmitters, including serotonin and acetylcholine. It is currently thought that a reduction of brain inositol levels may induce depression, as inositol levels in the cerebrospinal fluid have been shown to be low in patients with depression.
In double-blind studies, inositol has demonstrated therapeutic results (i.e. reduction in score of the Hamilton Depression Scale - HDS) similar to those of tricyclic antidepressant drugs - but WITHOUT the side effects.
Because of the effect of inositol on depression, a double-blind study was designed to test inositol's effectiveness in panic disorders. The frequency and severity of panic attacks declined significantly more after inositol, than after placebo administration.
L-theanine is an amino acid mostly found in tea leaves, used to help improve mood, lower stress, and to protect the brain and heart.26
L-theanine works by increasing brain serotonin and dopamine levels, which can help improve memory and learning. It also increases the levels and effectiveness of GABA, the body’s main inhibitory neurotransmitter. Lastly, it helps stimulate alpha brain wave activity, which can help cause mental relaxation, concentration, and deep REM sleep.27-30
Lithium is classified as an essential micro-nutrient, which means that all humans require it in small doses for good health.31 It's naturally present in various minerals, water, soil, fruits, vegetables, and other plants that are grown in lithium-rich soil. Unfortunately, it's now lacking in our nutrition due to how foods are grown these days. Which is unfortunate because low doses of lithium seem to make people more peaceful and friendly.
What's important to note is that the supplement form of Lithium "Orotate" is very different than the prescription form of Lithium "carbonate". The Orotate version in small amounts (exact clinical dose found in ProVanax) is both safe and beneficial for your mental and emotional health.
GABA is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, which means that it functions as the mind’s brakes. It slows down and stops the firing of brain cells and brings the mind to a state of relaxation and calmness.32
Scientists believe that GABA might be the mind’s natural calming signal. It’s thought to help people get good sleep, relax, and wind down.
Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that exist naturally in foods like yogurt and kimchi. They’re also available in pill or powder form. Probiotics help improve digestive health, and they’re often used to treat diarrhea or bloating.
However, there are numerous health benefits with using Probiotics, in addition to gut health. Recent research has shown a direct and indirect benefit in enhancing your brain AND emotional health as well.
Numerous studies have revealed the huge potential of probiotics for improving mood disorders, anxiety and fighting depression.33-35 Scientists now understand that depressive disorders are in fact, a "psycho-neuro-immunological" disorders and that Probiotic treatment can bring dramatic improvements.
NOTE: Not all probiotics work the same and they all have different benefits.
However, the three most powerful and studied Probiotic strains that help with mood are:
Each ProVanax™ veggie capsule contains over 100+ BILLION of these 3 specific "mood optimizing" probiotics (healthy bacteria).
Vitamins B6, B12, Folic Acid and the mineral - Magnesium, are all essential in the production of brain neurotransmitters. This becomes even more important during times of additional stress and as we age, especially if you're over the age of 35.
